    Bold Graphic Landscapes Class

INSTRUCTOR: Vicky Conley
WHEN: September 22nd & 23rd
WHERE: Westminster Presbyterian Church
COST: $88.00

ITINERARY:

  • Tuesday, September 22nd:  1:00 to 4:00 PM
  • Wednesday, September 23rd: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Turned Edge Machine Piecing & Dynamic Sky Techniques

In this 1–2 day workshop, you’ll create a striking graphic landscape quilt while learning two of Vicki Conley’s signature construction techniques—Turned Edge Machine Piecing and her dynamic Fussy Pieced skies—without the stress of precision piecing or traditional appliqué.

Students will construct one of Vicki’s bold landscape patterns while learning how to create clean finished edges with Turned Edge Machine Piecing and expressive skies using fussy piecing techniques that add movement, texture, and visual depth.

As part of the fussy piecing process, students will also learn how to design their own foundation paper piecing patterns and learn Vicki’s method of foundation paper piecing. These techniques can easily be adapted to many other quilting and design applications.

This is not appliqué. Instead, the quilt is constructed using Floriani Stitch and Wash Fusible Stabilizer, which remains inside the finished quilt to provide wonderful body and stability while remaining soft and easy to sew through.

All three landscape patterns are included with the class: the simple rock study, the Toadstool Rock formation pattern, and the new Monterey pattern. In a one-day class, Vicki recommends students focus on the smaller rock study in order to fully learn the techniques. Students will then have the skills, time  and confidence to complete one of the larger landscape patterns at home. In a two-day class, some students may choose to begin one of the larger patterns during class time.

Throughout the workshop, Vicki will discuss fabric selection, value, color placement, and design choices that help create dramatic, visually compelling landscapes. Students will leave with new techniques and the ability to apply these methods to future projects.

This class is perfect for quilters who:

  • Love bold graphic landscape imagery
  • Want a clean finished look without traditional appliqué
  • Enjoy expressive skies and creative fabric combinations
  • Want to learn an approachable method for foundation paper piecing
  • Prefer creativity and design over perfect points and precision sewing

No advanced drawing skills or precision piecing required—just a sewing machine, fabric, and a willingness to experiment creatively.
